Applied Research with Hidden and Marginal Populations -
Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis and Collection
4 - 8 August (one week course / 35 hrs)
http://www.essex.ac.uk/methods/courses/3q08.shtm

Course Content: The course provides an introduction to research methods in conducting research, both quantitative and qualitative, with marginal and hidden populations, such as children, migrants, sex workers, homeless, victim's conflicts or trafficking, HIV/AIDS, drug addicted, refugees and displaced people. The course introduces the main theories and approaches on hidden and marginal populations, using different frameworks and techniques. Focusing on action-oriented research, the course explores topics such as estimation and sampling challenges, participatory research, the use of qualitative and quantitative methods, and ethical considerations arising when conducting this type of research.

Course Objectives: The course aims to enable participants to undertake empirical research with marginal and hidden populations, and seeks to encourage participants to develop methodological strategies for the collection and analysis of such data. This entails using several data-gathering and analytic strategies, and knowing the ethical considerations to be taken into account.

Structure: This intensive course is structured in morning and afternoon sessions (and in some cases, in "brown bag" facultative practical exercises at lunch break). The course brings together academics (PhD and masters students) and practitioners (from NGOs, UN and International Organizations), creating a unique opportunity for experience sharing and methodological cross-fertilization. Participants will be encouraged to present their work to be used and discussed during the course. Combining both taught and practical sessions, the main emphasis of the course is on acquiring practical skills in doing research

This year the course will focus also on measuring human rights and will include a more advanced component on methods to assess the magnitude and estimating hard to reach populations including techniques such as: Capture and recapture, Cluster sampling, Adaptive cluster sampling, Respondent Driven Sampling.
